Furbies and Beanie Babies
held the puppy love of children
and embroidered their crazes into leashes
binding their interest.

Saturday mornings
called for weekend-sized excitement.
Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, cartoons played
from 6:00 A.M. to noon, when we'd get up, stumble,
zombie-walk to our next point of interest.

The millennium slipped
new century promises under our tongues, hoping
that they'd dissolve unnoticed.
I spat mine out mid-melt, letting the bitter pill diffuse
as I doused the aftertaste with youth.
